We all know the horrific scenes happening around the world right now, and now it is time to use your voice and make a change.

What is Black Lives Matter?

‘#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.’

Last week, a man called George Floyd was killed by white cops. This man was innocent and had his life taken away from him, based on the colour of his skin. This is not right. This happens every day all around the world and it needs to stop.

The murder of George Floyd hit the news all around the world and sparked the Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis.

Since then, every state in the USA have been protesting, wanting change. There have been so many disgusting actions made by the police and also Donald Trump. It is so upsetting to see all of these horrific acts, but you can help to make a difference too.

People all over the world have started to protest and fight for their freedom, liberation and justice.

How can you help?

  • Share links on your social media accounts
  • Educate each other
  • Sign petitions
  • Donate to fundraisers
  • Make a stand, raise your voice

You can do so much to help, no matter who you are. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have a lot of followers on social media, whether you ‘don’t know what to say’..

You can sign so many petitions that will hopefully make a change for so many lives. There is a Black Lives Matter resource where they post loads of links to incredible material. From donation links, to petitions, information about the protests, educational resources..

Please, go and check out these resources. I will post some below for you all.

It is so, so important to speak up about these issues. Racism takes innocent peoples lives from them and it has to stop.

I really do hope that you will all use your platforms to spread awareness, spread important information and resources so everybody can do their part. Our voices are so strong and can make a difference.

I have seen quite a lot of very large influencers with millions of followers who have not shared any resources or links to petitions or donation pages. This is so disappointing as they have such an enormous reach which could really help.

Do not get me wrong, some have posted the blackout tuesday square on their feed, but have not spoken out about the situation. This completely defeats the point of blackout tuesday. This was to take the time to pause, share important information and really use your voice to make people use theirs also.

Go and check out the incredible information all over Instagram with the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag. There are loads of pages that are sharing resources, sharing their stories whilst protesting and giving a real perspective.

Time for me to give you more resources.

What have I been doing to help?

I have signed as many petitions as I possibly can, hoping that with everyone else we can make a difference. I check these every day to see if there are any new additions, whilst also updating myself on the latest news of the protests too.

I have also been reading Noughts & Crosses the graphic novel, where they talk about racism. But the graphic novel is actually in a reverse perspective, so is very interesting to see. I feel like this is such an important read, and I encourage anyone to pick it up!

I am going to be getting my head stuck into even more books this week and listen to more podcasts.

On Apple Podcasts, there is a whole section on #BlackLivesMatter and another section on #BlackHistoryMatters. They have so many episodes that you can listen to which is incredible.

Black and POC UK Histories to be taught in schools?

If you head to the Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament website, there is currently a petition that wants to make Black and POC UK history mandatory in the Welsh education curriculum.

It is so important for children to learn about the history. They need to be aware of the circumstances that Black and POC have to live with every day of their lives.

Here is the link to the petition and I really hope you will want to sign it!

Reminder on petitions

Do not forget to verify your email once you have signed a petition. This is so important as your signature will not count, until you have verified your email.
