As some of you know, I love to be creative and create products for my etsy store.
I feel like 2021 is the year where I am going to take my creativity more seriously and strive to become part time creative, part time work. I have always had an online store, but never thought too much about it. I just did it for the pure enjoyment but the last few months have made me realise: why not try to pursue this part time?
I started my online creative journey way back in 2011 when I first started university. I would sell prints on my online store and to be honest, I didn’t quite know what I was doing. I knew that I enjoyed it and it gave me something to strive to.
Moving forward to 2020, I now sell magnetic bookmarks which are my best sellers, stickers, enamel pins, prints and even more. But I feel like 2021 is the time for me to experiment and really expand my products.
Being creative is a huge passion of mine, it is something I was think about day and night. You will always find me in deep thought, jotting down product ideas into my phone and desperately wanting to get my hands on my equipment whilst I’m at work or studying.
So, is this the start of my new adventure?
When it comes to product creation, I usually do everything from scratch. My passion is in illustration, but recently have found that I do not have as much time to sit down and design every single tiny element. That’s where websites like Font Bundles come in. I am not one to create handwritten text, as much as I would love to, it just does not happen. Font Bundles has thousands of different fonts from seasonal, regular to even handwritten fonts that you can purchase or download for free. There are also loads of different bundles that you can purchase for a discounted price which is incredible. I recently purchased a font bundle that features so many gorgeous handwritten typefaces which speeds up my creative process so much.
I feel like I can finally concentrate on creating the elements that I want from scratch and then know I have beautiful fonts to go alongside with these designs too.
What is my next step?
I currently have a Silhouette Portrait 2 machine which I absolutely love, but have also just purchased a Cricut Maker too which I have to save until christmas. I adore my Silhouette machine, but I would really like to experiment with more materials and have more options to work with. Whilst working, I do enjoy watching creative content from studio vlogs on youtube to arts related programmes and podcasts. BBC have a great page here that covers so many topics that are great to listen to whilst getting crafty!
I am now dipping my toe into the world of vinyl which is very exciting. You bet everybody is going to be receiving vinyl-clad items for christmas this year!
My first project that I have used vinyl on are these Santa Sanitiser bottles. I used the Oracal 651 vinyl in Light Red alongside with a handwritten font. Being able to easily and quickly use a beautiful font that is appealing for selling was so much easier for me. I think that in 2021, I am going to dive into the world of personalised items. This idea kinda scares me, but also excites me too as to what I can create..
Apart from vinyl, I think that I am going to develop some skills in sublimation. Am I going to create my own designs onto mugs? Am I going to use sublimation to transfer my design onto other materials like fabrics? Who knows! We will see where 2021 can take us.
I am really looking forward to this next step I am taking. I just want to get stuck in creating new products for you all to see, but I have two night shifts left before I can. More time for me to brainstorm, I guess!
2021 is all about me thinking with a business mindset. I believe that it is so important to do something that you have a passion for. When you work doing something you love, it doesn’t feel like work and that is what I would love to be the next change in my life. My family are incredibly supported and even help me out during the christmas rush with packaging my orders. So my family, alongside some great studio vlogs on YouTube make my motivation sky high.
So I say 2021, bring it on..
This year will be for me, self development and taking risks.
I want to say a gigantic thank you to everybody that has been so incredibly supportive of my small business. You have all stuck with me throughout, pushed me to strive for more and I am forever grateful for having such amazing people in my life. You have no idea how much I appreciate all of the social media shares, the comments and feedback on my products. It truly means the world to me and I hope to take you along on this great new adventure too! I am always feeling like I am all over the place, with nothing set in stone. So despite the really tough year we have all had, it feels great to come out of 2020 with some kind of clarity and a fresh mindset for the future.
